April Sex-Positive Holidays for the Sexual Wellness Industry

April Sex-Positive Holidays for the Sexual Wellness Industry

April has a vibrant tapestry of holidays and observances to note. These are just a handful of dates plucked from my annual marketing calendar - an exhaustive list that I’ve curated, updated, and shared for the past 6 years.

The “opportunity” here for businesses and entrepreneurs is not to sell your products and/or services but to offer inclusive, meaningful content that shares a peek into the heart and soul of your brand values. Purpose > performative.

How to demonstrate care and responsibility: in your content marketing:
✨ Dive into the rich history, origins, and significance of these observances. Some have an annual theme.
✨ Amplify voices and resources that elevate support for various communities.
✨ Include meaningful calls-to-action that foster inclusion and education.

(A good example of how to successfully and responsibly integrate s*x positive observances and news is @loversstores. Their slides and captions are comprehensive and well-researched. )

One sex-positive holiday in April that I find unique is Kanamara Matsuri - a Japanese cultural celebration of the phallus that started in 1969. The ongoing theme of the event has reportedly focused on fertility, marriage, and STI awareness, though thousands of people attend for a multitude of reasons.

“In the past, an estimated 50,000 people from around the world have gathered annually for Kanamara Matsuri. The festival has a positive message: raising awareness about safe s * x and gathering profits from merch sales to fund HIV research. The event has also been an inclusive space for Japanese LGBTQ communities.”

What monthly, weekly, or daily observance would your specific audience connect with the most?
