Your Product Descriptions Are Costing You Sales

Can I get technical for a minute?

Product knowledge is a fundamental part of my work. This has been the case for two decades across manufacturing, selling, and writing (product descriptions, product reviews, press releases, product user manuals, etc.). Today, I've been researching new sex toys for February 2026 and wondering why the majority of product descriptions leave out product measurements. The inconsistency... it makes my brain hurt. Someone please tell me why we are leaving out sizing details for products you put inside your damn body.

Vibrators are repeat offenders, but strokers and c-rings tend to offer the least amount of sizing information. These are two huge product categories where size matters! What are we doing, folks?! Products without dimensions don't just strain the customer's experience. Inadequate measurements also make retailers work harder when a customer is looking for a specific size.

When there are hundreds of similar C-rings to choose from, a missing measurement is enough to send me to another brand or retailer, personally. Why? Because the more thoughtful brand will always earn my trust & money.

Why are product measurements important for online shoppers?

  1. Shoppers search by measurements, not marketing jargon.
  2. Missing specs can mean missed sales conversions.
  3. Missing measurements increases the chance of returns.
  4. Comprehensive measurements reduce hesitation and friction for buyers.
  5. Comprehensive product information signals competence and thoughtfulness to retail customers.

What types of adult novelty products should include product measurements?

Pick a product category, any product category! Aside from liquids and other items that can’t be measured in inches or mm, it is safe to say that any product, novelty or accessory that is used on or inside the body applies. Including but not limited to:

  • Lingerie
  • Dils & vibes
  • Condoms
  • C-Rings
  • Butt stuff
  • Impact play tools
  • Masturbators
  • Wearables & Accessories (Harnesses, clamps, collars, cuffs, pasties, etc.)
  • Any insertable not mentioned in this list

What product measurements should go in a product description?

Condoms

  • Fit + shape details like shape, head style and base style
  • Nominal width (mm) / Flat width
  • Length (mm or inches)
  • Thickness (Microns or mm)
  • Maximum stretch or recommended girth range

  • Inner diameter
  • Inner circumference
  • Outer diameter
  • Circumference
  • Ring width / band thickness
  • Fixed size or adjustable
  • Stretch range

Dils & Vibes

  • Insertable Length
  • Total Length
  • Diameter or width at its widest
  • Based diameter
  • Circumference or girth
  • Tip or head width
  • Taper details
  • Suction cup diameter

Strokers

  • Total Length
  • Internal length
  • Internal width or girth range

Lingerie

…I told myself this blog wasn’t going to be a novel so I’m not even gonna touch this one.

What product measurements do consumers expect to see?

Here are two examples of helpful cock ring measurements:

What should be included in adult novelty and sexual wellness product descriptions?

  • Material
  • Volume / dB level
  • Shape (curved, flat, etc.)
  • Weight
  • Texture details
  • Material type
  • Remote control range
  • Vibration settings (morse code patterns)
  • Vibration intensity (rumbly, buzzy)
  • Firmness level (durometer)
  • Control panel placement
  • Motor quantity + placement/s
  • Rigidity
  • Size guides
  • Experience suitability
  • Harness compatibility
  • Charging port type & location
  • “Waterproof”: Submersible (IPX6 = splash-proof, IPX7 = temporary submersion, IPX8 = deeper continuous submersion) vs. water-resistant vs. splash-proof - they are all different. Tell me you know the difference.
  • "Free of" (parabens, glycerin, et.al.)

What is a good example of measurements in adult novelty product descriptions?

Manufacturer example: Bad Dragon sets the bar for product descriptions. Do you need to go to this length with your product descriptions? That depends on your brand, and how much effort you believe your customers are worth.

Retailer example: Spectrum Boutique is a solid example of clear, well-presented product measurements.

How can sexual wellness brands improve their product descriptions?

  1. Be more specific about measurements, even if it feels obvious. Not sure where to add measurements? Go bonkers and add them everywhere! Product title, product description, Specs/bullet points, and in the FAQ section, ooo weee.
  2. Don’t make the customer dig for measurements by burying them only in the description. Or worse, in the FAQs dropdown at the bottom of the product page.
  3. Include a size reference photo using an everyday item or an actual hand in product photos if possible.
  4. Specify the size in the product title. This is especially helpful for lingerie, dils & vibes. Again, shoppers search by size before buzzwords.
  5. Separate product specs from storytelling. The fun stuff can come later.
  6. List product specs in skimmable bullet points. This 2024 report indicates the average human attention span is 47 seconds, whereas this 2024 report suggests it is less than 9 seconds. Which means I've lost about 90% of blog readers at this point. 😂😭
  7. Adult novelty retailers: Take the extra step to include product measurements if they are available to you. Often they are listed in the “Additional Features” section of the product description, so you’ll have to add them to your description.
  8. Adult novelty distributors: Please request measurements from product vendors. Create a static section in your product description template for product measurements (not just packaging weight & dimensions).

It's one thing to reference 15" on a tape measure to gauge product size, and another thing entirely to see the item pictured with an entire adult arm. Regardless, consumers need specific measurements!

Also, note Prowler's product description title:

We are all aware that the adult novelty market is oversaturated with product options. One competitive advantage that any sex toy retailer or manufacturer can control is to do the legwork for your customer before they go elsewhere.
